Cowhide Product Care
Cowhide Rug Care – Cleaning Tips for your Cowhide Rug
Cowhide rugs are resistant to stains and are surprisingly easy to maintain and care for. Other than periodic light vacuuming, simple soap and water on a sponge is generally all that any of our cowhide rugs or other cowhide products will ever need. Steam cleaning your cowhide rug will also work if one makes certain not to soak the cowhide or get water on the back of the cowhide rug.
SHAKING/BEATING THE COWHIDE RUG
Many people prefer to shake or beat the rug outside instead of vacuuming. Both are successful in removing dust and debris. Just simply take the rug outside and shake it or hit it against the wall if it’s too large to shake. This a highly effective way to quickly get off all the surface particles off the rug. Don’t worry though, the hair won’t fall out, our hides are incredibly durable!
VACUUM CLEANING
For regular cleaning, vacuuming (suction only) is quite safe and actually suggested since periodically removing dirt will keep dirt particles from acting like a grinding stone when constantly being walked on.
STEAM CLEANING
Every rug benefits from a deep cleaning occasionally and steam cleaning is a highly effective method. Push your steam cleaner in the direction of the hair. Make sure not to saturate the hide or get the back of the cowhide wet. Afterwards, allow the rug to air dry.
Also, on a side note: you should always make sure to vacuum the rug first for the most effective deep clean.
Cleaning and caring for your cowhide rugs is surprisingly easy. Especially compared to other rugs. They are very resilient and resist staining due to them being a natural animal product. These simple and common-sense cleaning methods will keep your cowhide rug looking as clean and fresh as the day it arrived in your home!
Hanging Instructions For Our Cowhide Rugs
Many people use our cowhide rugs for wall hangings or even on the ceiling! Although one could make a mounting bracket that the cowhide rug would attach to, it is much easier simply to nail or staple your cowhide rug to the wall using small nails or large staples. Mounting cowhides to a brick or concrete wall is a bit more difficult. We recommend asking someone at Home Depot or any other hardware store for suggestions.
As a side note, please do not be concerned with damaging your cowhide rug. Properly tanned cowhides are practically indestructible.
