Cowhide rugs are beautiful and durable, but they can get stained like any other rug. Whether it’s spilled food, drinks, or pet accidents, it’s important to clean stains properly to keep your rug looking its best. Here’s how to remove stains from your cowhide rug in simple steps.
1. Act Quickly
The sooner you clean a stain, the easier it will be to remove. If you spill something, like coffee or wine, immediately blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel. Don’t rub, as this can push the stain deeper into the fibers.
2. Dry Stains
For dry stains, such as dirt or mud, use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Gently vacuum the area to remove as much of the dry debris as possible. If the mud is still wet, let it dry first before vacuuming.
3. Use Mild Soap for Liquids
If a liquid has spilled on your rug, like juice or milk, mix a small amount of mild dish soap with water. Dampen a soft cloth with the soapy water, and gently blot the stained area. Avoid soaking the rug. After blotting, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away any soap.
4. Removing Pet Stains
For pet accidents, it’s important to clean the area quickly to avoid odors. First, blot the area with a clean cloth to soak up any liquid. Then, mix water with a small amount of white vinegar (about 1:1 ratio). Dampen a cloth with the solution and blot the stain. After cleaning, use a dry cloth to absorb excess moisture, and let the rug air dry.
5. Grease or Oil Stains
For grease or oil stains, sprinkle some cornstarch or baking soda on the stain. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes to absorb the grease. Then, gently brush or vacuum the powder off. If the stain is still there, you can repeat the process or use a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cloth to gently blot the stain.
6. Drying the Rug
Once the stain is removed, it’s important to let the rug air dry. Avoid using a hairdryer or direct heat, as this can damage the hide. Lay the rug flat in a well-ventilated area.
7. Regular Maintenance
To keep your cowhide rug in good shape, vacuum it regularly with a soft brush attachment and clean up spills as soon as possible. Periodic professional cleaning is also a good idea for deep stains or heavy soiling.
